The GenAI Literacy Gap: Why Older Adults Need Better AI Education<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Generative AI is quickly becoming part of everyday life. It appears in search engines, healthcare portals, banking services, writing tools and customer-support systems. Yet many older adults have had little opportunity to learn how these systems work\u2014or how to use them safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Recent studies from South Korea, India and Kenya suggest that the divide involves more than access to technology. Digital skills, trust, language, interface design and family support all affect whether an older person feels comfortable using AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A 2025 survey by the Seoul AI Foundation found that 43.2 percent of Seoul residents had used generative AI, up from 15.4 percent in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The difference between age groups was striking. Among people younger than 55, reported use reached 63.9 percent. Among older adults, it was only 12.2 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That gap matters because AI is no longer limited to experimental chatbots. It is increasingly built into services people use to obtain information, manage money, communicate with organizations and make healthcare decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Research from other countries has identified similar challenges, although the circumstances differ from place to place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A 2025 study of older adults in India found that 49 percent considered limited digital literacy a primary obstacle to using AI-enabled healthcare tools. Another 37 percent reported that they did not trust AI systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A separate study involving 388 older adults in Kenya identified practical and emotional barriers. Participants reported difficulty with unfamiliar interfaces, language limitations and uncertainty about the role technology should play in their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These findings should not be treated as a universal description of every older adult. Someone who has worked with computers for decades may be more comfortable with AI than a much younger person who has limited digital experience. Age alone does not determine someone\u2019s ability or willingness to use technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Still, the studies reveal a consistent problem: many AI products are introduced without giving older users enough time, instruction or support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Researchers are also exploring whether AI can help close its own literacy gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the 2025 ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, researchers presented a chatbot called Litti. It was designed to help adults aged 65 and older learn about generative AI through practical activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Participants used the chatbot for five types of tasks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The study found encouraging signs, but not a simple success story. Participants generally enjoyed the experience and showed a positive trend in AI literacy. However, the measured improvement was not statistically significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Interviews with participants provided useful context. Many wanted more time to practice and preferred instruction that moved at their own pace. Enjoying a chatbot also did not automatically make participants trust AI or feel safer using it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That distinction is important. Knowing how to enter a prompt is not the same as understanding when an answer may be wrong, biased or misleading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
AI literacy is becoming part of basic digital literacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Older adults increasingly encounter automated systems in healthcare, government services, banking and online customer support. They may not always be told when AI is involved or what role it plays in a decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is also a growing safety concern. AI can make fraudulent emails, text messages, cloned voices and fabricated images more convincing. People need practical ways to verify unexpected requests, especially those involving money, passwords or urgent claims from family members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Seoul survey illustrates the confidence gap. About 30.1 percent of older respondents said they felt more worried than optimistic about AI, compared with 9.3 percent of younger respondents. Only 19.6 percent of older adults said they felt prepared for the AI era, while 65 percent of younger respondents felt prepared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It would be easy to dismiss those concerns as resistance to change. A better interpretation is that people are being asked to trust unfamiliar systems without enough explanation or support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Teaching older adults about AI should begin with useful, familiar situations\u2014not technical definitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Help from a family member, caregiver, librarian or community instructor can make unfamiliar technology less intimidating. In the Indian study, family support was a stronger predictor of technology empowerment than age or education alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The person providing help should avoid taking over the device. The goal is to let the learner perform each step and build confidence through practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A first session might involve asking a chatbot to explain a confusing letter, suggest questions for a doctor or create a grocery list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Starting with a real need makes the technology easier to understand. It also gives the learner a reason to decide whether the tool is genuinely useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
New users should know that an AI response can sound confident and still be incorrect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Basic lessons should cover:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Safety should not be saved for an advanced class. It belongs in the first lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Voice input, larger text, clear navigation and multilingual support can make AI tools easier to use. The Kenyan study examined a chatbot that combined voice and text, reflecting the need for more than one way to communicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Accessible design benefits many people, not only older adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A one-time demonstration is rarely enough. Confidence develops when people can repeat a task, ask questions and make mistakes without feeling rushed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Training should be paced around the learner rather than the software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Organizations serving older adults should not assume that introducing an AI tool is the same as making it accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A useful program may need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trust must be earned. People are more likely to use an AI system when they understand what it does, what information it collects and what happens when it makes a mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Older adults are not a single group, and they should not be treated as passive recipients of technology. They bring different levels of experience, ability, curiosity and skepticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The goal should not be to persuade everyone to embrace AI. It should be to give people enough knowledge to make informed choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Good AI education helps someone decide when a tool is useful, when its answer should be questioned and when a human being is still the better source of help. As AI becomes more common, that kind of judgment may be more valuable than learning any particular chatbot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
